Discover five of the best photography locations in Cary, NC, from modern Fenton to scenic Lake Crabtree, and find the setting that fits your session best.
If you’re looking for a photography location in Cary, NC, you have quite a few options—and they don’t all give you the same look. Some locations are better for a modern, urban feel, while others offer wooded scenery, water views, or a more classic outdoor setting.
When I help clients choose a location, I think about more than whether a place is pretty. I consider the overall look of the photographs, the type of backgrounds available, the time of day, and how much variety we can get from one location.
Here are five Cary photography locations that each offer something different.

Best for: modern, clean, and editorial photographs
Fenton is one of the best choices in Cary if you don’t want your photos to look like they were taken at a typical park.
The biggest advantage here is the architecture. The modern buildings, storefronts, sidewalks, staircases, and clean lines create a contemporary backdrop that works particularly well if you prefer a more polished or editorial style.
The neutral architecture also makes clothing stand out. Instead of competing with a lot of greenery or colorful scenery, your outfits and expressions become more of the focus.
Another reason to choose Fenton is the variety of urban-style backgrounds within a relatively compact area. You can get photographs against buildings, along walkways, and in more open architectural spaces without having to drive to multiple locations.
Fenton is also a good option if you want photographs that feel less tied to a specific season. While parks can look very different depending on the time of year, the architecture at Fenton gives you a more consistent backdrop year-round.
Choose Fenton if: you like modern architecture, clean backgrounds, neutral colors, and a more editorial look.

Best for: charming, lifestyle-inspired photographs with a sense of place
Downtown Cary has a completely different feel from Fenton. Instead of modern development, you get a combination of historic character, local businesses, streets, sidewalks, and greenery.
The main reason to choose downtown Cary is character. The buildings and streets give your photographs a setting that feels distinctly local rather than simply providing a generic outdoor backdrop.
It’s also a good choice if you like the idea of incorporating more lifestyle elements into your session. The downtown environment lends itself well to photographs that feel like you’re spending an afternoon together rather than simply taking formal portraits.
The variety of textures and architecture can also make the gallery feel more interesting. You can have some images with buildings in the background, others along the streets, and others with greenery without changing locations completely.
Downtown Cary can be especially appealing if you want your photographs to feel a little more candid and documentary-inspired.
Choose Downtown Cary if: you want local character, architecture, and a more lifestyle-oriented feel.

Best for: water, open landscapes, and golden-hour photographs
Lake Crabtree is the choice I’d consider if you specifically want water and natural scenery in your photographs.
The lake gives you something that the other locations on this list don’t: an expansive natural landscape with water as part of the background. That can create a much more open feeling than a wooded park or downtown setting.
The surrounding trails and trees also give you more traditional nature backdrops, so you’re not limited to photographs beside the water.
Timing is an important consideration here. Lake Crabtree can be especially beautiful around sunset when the light becomes softer and warmer. If you’re hoping for that warm, glowing look in your photographs, this type of open landscape can be a great fit.
The location is also a good choice if you want your photographs to feel distinctly outdoorsy without being entirely surrounded by dense woods.
Choose Lake Crabtree if: you want water views, open scenery, natural landscapes, and beautiful sunset light.
Best for: dramatic woods and a more intimate, natural look
Hemlock Bluffs stands out because of its dense, mature woodland setting.
If you picture your photographs surrounded by tall trees rather than open fields or buildings, this is the location to consider. The wooded environment creates a much more intimate backdrop and gives photographs a strong sense of depth.
The trees can also provide more consistent shade than an open location, which can be helpful when you’re photographing earlier in the day. Instead of relying entirely on direct sunlight, the canopy creates softer, filtered light throughout portions of the preserve.
Another reason to choose Hemlock Bluffs is that the landscape itself has more visual character than a typical flat, grassy park. The trails and changes in elevation can create photographs with more dimension and a stronger connection to the natural environment.
There is also a seasonal consideration. Because the location is heavily wooded, the look changes noticeably throughout the year. Fall can bring beautiful color, while spring and summer offer lush greenery.
Choose Hemlock Bluffs if: you love wooded photographs, mature trees, filtered light, and a more intimate natural setting.

Best for: a classic outdoor setting with the most versatility
Bond Park is a great choice when you want a natural setting but don’t want your photographs to be defined by one specific feature.
The park offers a combination of wooded areas, open spaces, trails, and water, which gives us several different types of backgrounds to work with during one session.
That’s what makes Bond Park particularly useful when you want variety. Rather than choosing a location because you specifically want architecture or lake views, you can use the different environments throughout the park to create a more diverse gallery.
It’s also a good option if you’re looking for a classic outdoor photography aesthetic. The natural scenery won’t overpower the photographs, which makes it easy to create images that feel timeless rather than heavily styled.
Bond Park’s variety also makes it a practical choice when you’re not quite sure what type of setting you want. You can start with one area and adjust based on what looks best that day.
Choose Bond Park if: you want a traditional outdoor setting with several different natural backdrops to choose from.
Each of these locations offers something different, so I don’t think there’s one location that’s universally “best.”
When planning a session, I like to start with the look you want your photographs to have and work backward from there. Your location should complement that vision rather than simply being the closest pretty place.
And if you’re not sure which setting fits, that’s something I can help with. Part of my job as a Cary photographer is helping you choose a location that makes sense for the kind of photographs you’re hoping to create.
