The Best Locations for Family Photos in Raleigh, NC

Locations

One of the first questions I hear when planning a family photography session is, “Where should we take our photos?”

Luckily, Raleigh has no shortage of beautiful locations. From gardens and historic properties to wide-open fields, beautiful architecture, and downtown streets, there are plenty of places that can create a beautiful backdrop for your family photos.

But choosing a location isn’t just about finding the prettiest spot. I also think about the time of day, the season, how much variety we can get during the session, and, especially for families with young children, how comfortable the location will be.

As a Raleigh family photographer, I love helping families choose a location that fits not only the look they want, but also their family and the experience they want to have.

Here are some of my favorite Raleigh-area locations to consider for your next family photography session.

JC Raulston Arboretum

The JC Raulston Arboretum is one of my favorite options for families who want a garden setting with lots of variety.

There are beautiful plants, flowers, mature trees, pathways, and different garden areas that can give us several distinct looks without needing to travel to multiple locations. Depending on the season, you can get completely different colors and textures throughout the property.

Spring and fall can be particularly beautiful, but there is something to photograph throughout much of the year.

I also love this type of location for families because we can incorporate movement. Instead of having everyone stand in one spot and smile, we can walk, explore, interact, and let the kids have something to do.

For the best light, I generally prefer scheduling outdoor sessions closer to the evening when the sun is lower and softer.

Best for: Families who love gardens, flowers, nature, and a variety of backgrounds.

Dorothea Dix Park

If you love open space and beautiful Raleigh views, Dorothea Dix Park is another great choice.

The wide-open landscape gives us room to move and creates a more relaxed, natural feeling for family portraits. It’s especially beautiful when the light is low and warm, which can create that soft, glowing look that works so well for portraits.

Because the park is so open, I like thinking carefully about the time of day and where the light will be during your session.

This can be a particularly good option for families with children who need a little room to run around and be themselves.

Best for: Families who want an open, natural setting with plenty of room for movement.

WRAL Azalea Gardens

For a colorful garden setting, the WRAL Azalea Gardens are a Raleigh favorite.

When the azaleas are in bloom, the gardens can provide gorgeous pops of color and a distinctly North Carolina feel. Spring is obviously an especially popular time here, but the gardens offer more than just the flowers. There are mature trees, pathways, greenery, and other natural elements that can provide variety throughout a session.

Because the spring blooms are seasonal, timing can be important if having the azaleas in your photographs is a priority.

Best for: Spring family sessions, colorful portraits, and families who love lush gardens.

Historic Oak View County Park

If you want something with a little more history and character, Historic Oak View County Park is worth considering.

The historic buildings, mature trees, gardens, and open areas provide several different looks within one location. That makes it possible to create a gallery that feels varied without making your family travel all over Raleigh.

I especially love locations that give us both beautiful scenery and interesting architectural elements. It allows us to create portraits that feel a little different from the typical outdoor family photograph.

Best for: Families who love historic settings, gardens, and a mix of architecture and nature.

North Carolina Museum of Art

The North Carolina Museum of Art is another incredibly versatile location for family portraits.

The museum grounds offer a beautiful mix of open fields, walking paths, and natural spaces that give families plenty of room to move around and interact naturally. It’s a great option if you want your photos to feel relaxed and candid while still having a variety of scenery throughout your session.

The wide-open fields are especially beautiful when the light is softer later in the day, creating that warm, glowing look that works so well for family portraits.

With plenty of space to explore, this location can be a great fit for families with young children who may not want to stand still for every photo. We can let them move, play, and be themselves while capturing those genuine moments along the way.

Best for: Families who want a relaxed outdoor setting with open fields, natural scenery, and plenty of room to move.

The Raleigh Rose Garden

The Raleigh Rose Garden is a beautiful choice for families who love the look of a classic garden setting.

Located near downtown Raleigh, the garden offers rows of roses, lush greenery, and charming pathways that create a beautiful backdrop without feeling overly formal. The variety of flowers and greenery also gives us plenty of options for moving around during your session and capturing a mix of portraits and candid moments.

The garden is especially beautiful when the roses are in bloom, adding soft color and texture throughout your photographs. It’s a great option if you want your family photos to feel bright, colorful, and timeless.

Because the garden has more defined paths and spaces, it can also be a nice choice for families who prefer a location that feels a little more structured while still allowing plenty of room for natural interaction.

Best for: Families who love colorful gardens, flowers, and a classic Raleigh setting with plenty of natural beauty.

Pullen Park

Pullen Park is a wonderful option, especially for families with young children.

One of the things I love about photographing here is the beautiful walkway that runs alongside the water. There is a river, a bridge that can be incorporated into photographs, and lots of large, mature trees throughout the park.

The combination of water, trees, pathways, and the bridge gives us plenty of variety while still keeping the session relaxed and easy to navigate.

It’s also a great location for families who don’t want their children standing still for an entire session. We can walk, play, interact, and move around while I give you prompts and capture those natural moments along the way.

Best for: Families with young children, playful sessions, and families who love trees, water, and natural surroundings.

Downtown Raleigh and the NC State Capitol

If you want something completely different from a garden or park, consider downtown Raleigh.

The North Carolina State Capitol building and the surrounding downtown area can create a fun, urban feel for your portraits. The architecture, sidewalks, streets, and historic buildings give us a chance to create images that feel more editorial and energetic.

This can be especially fun for families with older children or seniors, but it can work beautifully for anyone who wants something a little less traditional.

If you are drawn to city architecture and want photographs that feel distinctly Raleigh, downtown is definitely worth considering.

Best for: Families with older children, seniors, couples, and anyone who wants a fun downtown or urban vibe.

How Do You Choose the Right Location?

With so many beautiful places around Raleigh, you don’t necessarily need to choose the location simply because it is the most popular.

I want to choose a location that fits your family and the photographs you envision.

Are you drawn to flowers and gardens? Do you want wide-open spaces and golden light? Would you rather have historic architecture or something modern and artistic? Do your children need room to move?

Those details all matter.

There are so many options for family photography in Raleigh, NC, and each location creates a different feeling in your final images.
