A Raleigh senior session at JC Raulston Arboretum and NC State’s Bell Tower, featuring multiple outfits and two unique locations

Sessions

Senior year is an exciting milestone, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. It’s also the perfect time to create portraits that reflect who you are now and where you hope to go next.

For this senior session in Raleigh, we chose two locations that offered different looks and a personal connection to her future: JC Raulston Arboretum and the NC State Memorial Belltower. Since Addison is applying to NC State, she wanted to incorporate the university into her senior portraits to add some meaning into the session.

Starting at JC Raulston Arboretum

We began the session at JC Raulston Arboretum, a beautiful garden in Raleigh with a variety of plants, greenery, and natural backdrops. It’s a great location for senior portraits because it offers plenty of variety without having to travel between multiple spots.

Garden paths, open greenery, and different textures throughout the landscape create opportunities for a mix of close-up portraits, full-body images, and photos that capture more of the surroundings.

I love locations like this for Raleigh senior photography because the natural scenery creates a timeless look without distracting from the person in the photo. The different areas also help create a gallery that doesn’t feel repetitive, giving seniors a variety of images to choose from.

When choosing a location for your senior photos, think about more than just how it looks. Consider whether it fits your style and offers enough variety to create a collection of images you’ll enjoy looking back on for years to come.

Incorporating a Future College Into Senior Photos

After the arboretum, we headed to the NC State Memorial Belltower. This was an especially meaningful stop because she is applying to NC State and hopes to attend.

Including a potential future college in your senior portraits is a great way to personalize your session. Rather than choosing a location simply because it’s pretty, you can incorporate a place that represents something you’re working toward.

You don’t have to be officially committed to a university to take photos on or around its campus. If you have a school you’re excited about, consider including a recognizable landmark, wearing a college sweatshirt, or using the campus as a backdrop.

Even if your plans change, these photos can still serve as a reminder of your goals and what you were looking forward to during your senior year.

Why Multiple Outfits Make a Difference

One of my favorite ways to create a complete gallery of Raleigh senior portraits is by incorporating multiple outfits. Changing outfits adds variety and allows you to show different sides of your personality.

For this session, having two locations and different outfit options helped create a collection of images with distinct looks. A dressier outfit can create classic portraits, while a more casual look feels relaxed and personal. Adding a college-inspired outfit can also be a great way to tie in your future plans.

You don’t need to bring your entire closet to get variety. Two or three thoughtfully chosen outfits are often enough to give your gallery several different looks.

When planning your outfits, I recommend choosing clothing that feels like you, coordinating colors with your locations, and including at least one casual option. You can also bring something meaningful, such as a school sweatshirt, sports uniform, or other item that reflects your interests.

The goal is to create variety while making sure your photos still feel authentic to you.

Planning Your Own Raleigh Senior Session

Combining JC Raulston Arboretum with the NC State Belltower gave this session a balance of natural scenery and personal meaning. Each location offered something different, helping create a gallery that reflected both her personality and her hopes for the future.

When planning your own senior portraits in Raleigh, NC, think about the places that matter to you, the outfits that make you feel confident, and the interests you want represented in your images. These details can make your session feel much more personal than simply choosing a backdrop.

As a Raleigh senior photographer, I help seniors plan sessions around their preferred locations, outfits, and the types of images they want to create.

Whether you’re celebrating graduation, preparing for college, or documenting this season of life, your senior portraits should reflect who you are and what makes this time special.

If you’re planning senior photos in Raleigh, Cary, or the surrounding Triangle area, I’d love to help you create a session that’s unique to you.
